"You Mean-Spirited, Proud, and Critical Person!"

Paul Washer : Download Sermon

“If for the name of being civilized, we did not raise our voice so that someone would not think ‘unproperly’ of us, would you not HATE us that we cared more about ourselves and our own reputation than we did the welfare of your child?” – Paul Washer

ou’re too arrogant, insensitive and self-centered! Is it truly arrogant, mean-spirited, and proud to speak the Truth of Scripture, or are we overly concerned with the problems and self-esteem of men? Are we too concerned with what people feel as to forget importance of their souls? Does being sensitive to the congregation justify this great diservice to the Cross? Oh, that we may repent! Has this sensitivity taken away the power from our pulpits? Are we too worried that our congregations would not understand the things of God? Oh, it is far from it! They may not understand the terms or the doctrines, but if they are really Christ’s Elect the Spirit of God will nevertheless prick their hearts and work upon their Souls!

Has the offense of the Cross really been taken away from our preaching? I pray that it would return.

The cost of preaching? “The world against you and the church!” That is the cost of preaching the Truth of the Word! To the wind with marketing strategies and making things creative and relevant for the people! But preach the hard truth of Scripture! The fullness of the truth of the Cross, God’s holiness and sovereignty and His Attributes. Be not concerned that people would not understand, or that it is such an unpalatable message. But believe that the effectivity of preaching is not upon the abilities of men in sermon proclamation, but that it pleases God that in the foolishness of preaching of the hard truths of scripture He chose to save men, and work on the sanctification of His saints.

Watch this clip from Paul Washer’s sermon, I am not Ashamed of the Scandal, where he emphatically declares the over-arching and superseding importance of the souls of men and the glory of God than people’s self-esteem and felt needs.
