The Prayer of the Arminian

C. H. Spurgeon : Download Sermon here

Any one who believes that man’s will is entirely free, and that he can be saved by it, does not believe the fall…

But I tell you what will be the best proof of that; it is the great fact that you never did meet a Christian in your life who ever said he came to Christ without Christ coming to him. You have heard a great many Arminian sermons, I dare say; but you never heard an Arminian prayer – for the saints in prayer appear as one in word, and deed and mind. An Arminian on his knees would pray desperately like a Calvinist. He cannot pray about free-will: there is no room for it. Fancy him praying,

“Lord, I thank thee I am not like those poor presumptuous Calvinists Lord, I was born with a glorious free-will; I was born with power by which I can turn to thee of myself; I have improved my grace. If everybody had done the same with their grace that I have, they might all have been saved. Lord, I know thou dost not make us willing if we are not willing ourselves. Thou givest grace to everybody; some do not improve it, but I do. There are many that will go to hell as much bought with the blood of Christ as I was; they had as much of the Holy Ghost given to them; they had as good a chance, and were as much blessed as I am. It was not thy grace that made us to differ; I know it did a great deal, still I turned the point; I made use of what was given me, and others did not-that is the difference between me and them.”

That is a prayer for the devil, for nobody else would offer such a prayer as that. Ah! when they are preaching and talking very slowly, there may be wrong doctrine; but when they come to pray, the true thing slips out; they cannot help it. If a man talks very slowly, he may speak in a fine manner; but when he comes to talk fast, the old brogue of his country, where he was born, slips out. I ask you again, did you ever meet a Christian man who said, “I came to Christ without the power of the Spirit?” If you ever did meet such a man, you need have no hesitation in saying, “My dear sir, I quite believe it-and I believe you went away again without the power of the Spirit, and that you know nothing about the matter, and are in the gall of bitterness and the bond of iniquity.” Do I hear one Christian man saying, “I sought Jesus before he sought me; I went to the Spirit, and the Spirit did not come to me”? No, beloved; we are obliged, each one of us, to put our hands to our hearts and say-”

“Grace taught my soul to pray,
And made my eyes to o’erflow;
‘Twas grace that kept me to this day, And will not let me go.”

Is there one here—a solitary one—man or woman, young or old, who can say, “I sought God before he sought me?” No; even you who are a little Arminian, will sing—

“O yes! I do love Jesus—
Because he first loved me.”

    perfect! Arminians exposed!!! The prayer says it all! There is not way they can escape now.. this is a great reinforcement bes.. really great.. If God willing, and after I've fully established myself in our Church, I'll be sharing reformed theology, using these resources..Amazing bes! God is amazing that He hath loved us!want to emphasize this part:ah! when they are preaching and talking very slowly, there may be wrong doctrine; but when they come to pray, the true thing slips out; they cannot help it.

    That's great bes! May the Lord lead you all the way!I think we can see another side of the arminian faith in this "prayer", 'coz it seems to me that if this assertion is indeed true that arminian and calvinist alike would still, ultimately, ascribe all glory to God in all His work, I am forced to believe that the belief in falsehoods such as the edification of the will of man, and the nature therof (or maybe the majority of what is in the arminian faith) is only due to the ignorance of true truth. Where it is not that they firmly believe this theology, but they haven't really gotten grips with the scripture itself. It's not that they truly advocate the heresy of God's limited sovereignty, I think it's just that they have never thought otherwise.Though I must accept the fact there too are convicted Arminians like Dave Hunt who reject reformed theology as it is, I still believe that the majority of those who adhere that line of "faith" are simply misinformed or unexposed to the truth of the simplicity of the Sovereign Gospel of God.

    But then another realization is the thought that Pastors and Ministers are going about such doctrine without their even knowing, is simply unthinkable, since they, being called of God, "should" and "must" give themselves "wholly" to the study of God's Word!In conclusion, I would say that the church today has become so much "cultural" rather than it being "historical". . . we are so much "New Wave" that we unconsciously turn a blind eye to the never changing truth of "Scripture" and lead others to do the same.

    Well said bes.. well said.. As a former Arminian and also by obeserving modern-day Churches, most Christians fully accept the doctrine of predestination (I have never encountered one who doesn't probably because the Bible states it clearly from the old to the new testament), however, they still simply could not explain how predestination could occur when human will exists.The people know the truth, but, like you said, they haven't given up wholly to it. And the truth really goes against our corrupted natures. Our vile nature will defend itself in an attempt to minimize God's sovereign grace simply because it could not accept the fact that it has absolutely no control.The flesh wants control. The reason why Adam and Even sinned is because they "wanted to be god" which is synonymous to saying that they want absolute power, knowledge and control over everything else.Satan, himself, in Ezekiel 28 and Isaiah 14 (Not sure though), wanting also to be "god" rebelled against the Lord.Our natures simply do not want to be trampled on. We all crave for that dark sense of control. And as James said, sin is born when we become entrapped in our own evil desires. Indeed the first sin was born from such.No wonder the world hates the Gospel. The Gospel will tell us that we're vile and that, unless God intervenes and draws us to Him by His grace, there will be nothing left for us but eternal torment.If people would just wholly give themselves up to the Truth of our Savior and also with His irresistible grace, the Gospel will have more power in their lives.The Gospel is really a message of hope, grace and ultimately, love. We are in a sinking ship and those that escape can only do so by His grace. Apart from that, there is nothing else but eternal condemnation.This is Truth has to be known. Perhaps I'm gonna use these materials but first, by the grace of our good Lord, I've gotta preach the Gospel (again). Many of my brothers and sisters are not yet saved bes. They go to Church but you can see the spiritual famine brought about by these false fires inside them.Lets continue praying for one another bes for the good of His Name, Kingdom and glory!

    Very true bes! Very true!I'm reminded by what Paul Washer said in one of his sermons, (I am under Obligation), that it all starts with the local congregation. As much as our desire to preach the word of Truth to a great many people, our desire for them should and must be reflected to our desire for "one". Where if we are compelled by God to preach to many, we should be more diligent and passionate in preaching and teaching to one. To our seatmates, the people around us, the janitor. . . as hard as it is, especially to our family.
