Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing

Come, Thou Fount of every blessing, Tune my heart to sing Thy grace; Streams of mercy, never ceasing, Call for songs of loudest praise. Teach me some melodious sonnet, Sung by flaming tongues above. Praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it, Mount of Thy redeeming love. Sorrowing I shall be in spirit, Till released from flesh and sin, Yet from what I do inherit, Here Thy praises I’ll begin; Here I raise my Ebenezer; Here by Thy great help I’ve come; And I hope, by Thy good pleasure, Safely to ...

Thou Hatest All Workers of Iniquity, Not Just Iniquity

If it be true that God loves every member of the human family, then why did our Lord tell His disciples “He that hath My commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth Me: and he that loveth Me shall be loved of My Father…If a man love Me, he will keep My words: and My Father will love him.” (John 14:21, 23)? Why say “he that loveth Me shall be loved of My ...

When This Passing World Is Done

For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known. (1 Cor 13:12) When this passing world is done, When has sunk yon radiant sun, When I stand with Christ on high, Looking o'er life's history, Then, Lord, shall I fully know, Not till then, how much I owe. When I stand before the throne, Dressed in beauty not my own, When I see ...

God’s Sovereign Kingship

Finally, I am able to bring myself to continue on my series on the doctrines recovered at the time of the reformation. I want to begin this post with a question. "Why bother?" If we are to be perfectly honest with ourselves, these truths are not what you would choose to build a mega church or to start a massive scale campus harvest. This system of theology is not one that would make you extremely ...

The Misery of Being Without God

I shall envy them no more, Who grow profanely great, Though they increase their golden store, And rise to wondrous height. They taste of all the joys that grow, Upon the earthly clod! Well, they may search the creature through, For they have ne'er a God— Shake off the thoughts of dying too, And think your life your own: But death comes hast'ning on to you, To mow your glory down. Yes, you must bow your stately head, Away your spirit flies; And no kind angel near your bed, To ...

When I Survey the Wondrous Cross

“May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.”---Galatians 6:14 When I Survey the Wondrous Cross When I survey the wondrous cross On which the Prince of glory died, My richest gain I count but loss, And pour contempt on all my pride. Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, Save in the death of Christ my God! All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to His blood. See from His head, His hands, His feet, Sorrow and ...

A Mighty Fortress is Our God

I realize that I've yet again missed last week's Lord's Day Hymn. To make up to it I thought it would be quite fitting, as for a celebration of the Reformation Day last October 31, to offer this great Hymn written by dear Martin Luther himself. Included too is the best rendition I have ever heard of this hymn by Steve Green. This song has been called “the greatest hymn of the greatest man of the ...

The Sands of Time are Sinking

This week's Lord's Day hymn is to me, more than a hymn, but a prayerful plight. The author thinks of heavenly hope filling one's thoughts of the glory that is to come in Christ's coming like a thief in the night. Then she speaks of trials and struggles in the temporal life, waiting and hoping for that final Day to be sight. Then she exclaims what is soon to beheld, not garment, nor shining glory but the face of Christ Himself. The Sands ...

He is Not a Weak Beggar, He is a Powerful Savior

The Gospel of Calvinism as was just described is not: "Well, maybe God doesn't love you." You see the apostolic proclamation was "repent and believe." It wasn't "this is what God has done for you." Maybe the problem here is that we're judging the Gospel by our emotions and experiences rather than by the infallible, unchanging, inspired Word of God. I've heard no response to John 6, Ephesians 1, Romans 8 and 9, 1 Timothy 2. I've heard ...
