A Thousand Chapters from Thy Word. A Thousand Have been Read.

A few weeks before the year 2010 arrived I resolved to read my Bible with focus and discipline, with delight and eagerness. It has been 6 months since that time that I began reading the Word of God systematically, and I have been immensely blessed. I cannot put into justified words my indebtedness to such inexpressible grace. What a joy it is to be blessed able to read the Word of God. And yet what are we but vile sinners worthy of Hell? Still in Christ, we are counted more precious than sparrows, more precious than the lilies of the field though we are but dust.

I fall flat on my face and worship.

A thousand chapters have been read.
A thousand chapters from Thy Word.
I wouldn’t want anything else for my sweet bed
than the whispers from my Lord.

A thousand chapters have gone by
yet still it’s memory rings clear.
A thousand chapters to one such as I
His Word to my heart so dear.

Thy sweet milk of Thy sweet Word
has nourished this feeble soul.
Sovereign joy in Your great strong Sword
in Christ I have been made whole.

What heights of delight, skies of gladness
is the oil of Your blessed precepts.
Warmth to my soul, the cold breeze of the air
is Your law which gives me rest.

I thank Thee for thy thousand chapters,
and I pray for a thousand more.
For there’s no strength that I can muster
than that in Your infallible Word.

‘Tis so Sweet to Trust in Jesus
Louisa M. R. Stead, 1882.

’Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus,
And to take Him at His Word;
Just to rest upon His promise,
And to know, “Thus says the Lord!”

Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him!
How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!
O for grace to trust Him more!

O how sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just to trust His cleansing blood;
And in simple faith to plunge me
’Neath the healing, cleansing flood!

Yes, ’tis sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just from sin and self to cease;
Just from Jesus simply taking
Life and rest, and joy and peace.

I’m so glad I learned to trust Thee,
Precious Jesus, Savior, Friend;
And I know that Thou art with me,
Wilt be with me to the end.

“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the way of scoffers, but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.

He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither.

In all that he does, he prospers. The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away.

Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; for the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.”—Psalm 1

Life is like a stormy sea
That tosses to and fro,
But God’s Word will ever be
A ballast for my soul.
By its truth I’ll be held fast
Till I reach heaven’s shore
Where I will be home at last
And sail life’s sea no more!
