All That I Was, My Sin, My Guilt, My Death!

Since I missed posting last week's Lord's Day Hymn, here's an extra for this week. An extra, yet by no means any lesser in value, rather, just as Christ exalting as the rest. Let us declare with dear Horatius Bonar as we rest in the perfections of our Lord this day: Thy Word first made me feel my sin, It taught me to believe; Then, in believing, peace I found, And now I live, I live! All That I Was All that ...

How Comfortable is Your Christianity?

Is the Christianity of our day of the lofty kind of which apostolic men have left us so bright an example? Is it not feeble, indolent, self-indulgent, second-rate? Is there in it anything of the presentation of ‘living sacrifices’ to God, which is our acceptable and reasonable service? Are we not seeking our own, not the things which are Jesus Christ’s? Are we not feasting when the world is starving? Are we not at ease ...

Faith is Not Christ, Nor The Cross of Christ.

It is a sin-bearer that we need, and our faith cannot be a sin-bearer. Faith can expiate no guilt; can accomplish no propitiation; can pay no penalty; can wash away no stain; can provide no righteousness. It brings us to the cross, where there is expiation, and propitiation, and payment, and cleansing, and righteousness; but in itself it has no merit and no virtue. Faith is not Christ, nor the cross of Christ. Faith is not ...

He Came Not to Risk His Life; He Came to Die!

It is not by incarnation but by blood shedding that we are saved. The Christ of God is no mere expounder of wisdom; no mere deliverer or gracious benefactor; and they who think they have told the whole gospel, when they have spoken of Jesus revealing the love of God, do greatly err. If Christ be not the Substitute, he is nothing to the sinner. If he did not die as the Sin-bearer, he has ...

“We Believe but We Do Not Know Whether We are Saved.”

Horatius Bonar: The Everlasting Righteousness - ebook With a weak faith and a fearful heart many a sinner stands before the altar. but it is not the strength of his faith, but the perfection of the sacrifice, that saves; and no feebleness of faith, no dimness of eye, no trembling of hand, can change the efficacy of our burnt-offering. The vigor of our faith can add nothing to it, nor can the poverty of ...
