What though the way be lonely, and dark the shadows fall,
I know wher’er it leadeth, My Father planned it all.
I sing through the shade and the sunshine, I’ll trust Him whatever befall;
I sing for I cannot be silent, My Father planned it all.There may be sunshine tomorrow, Shadows may break and flee,
Twill be the way He chooses, My Father’s plan for me.
I sing through the shade and the sunshine, I’ll trust Him whatever befall;
I sing for I cannot be silent, My Father planned it all.He guides my fal’tring footsteps, A–long the weary way;
For well he knows the pathway, Will lead to endless day.
I sing through the shade and the sunshine, I’ll trust Him whatever befall;
I sing for I cannot be silent, My Father planned it all.A day of light and gladness, On which no shade will fall;
Tis this at last awaits me , My Father planned it all….
I sing through the shade and the sunshine, I’ll trust Him whatever befall;
I sing for I cannot be silent, My Father planned it all.
I stumbled upon this hymn viewing a friend‘s notes on facebook. This is the first time I’ve heard of this hymn, and reading it for the first time—I was immediately crushed. O dear soul, if you truly understand what these words mean, if your eyes can see and your ears can hear and your mind can grasp even a little the glorious message of this hmyn… Fall flat on your face and worship.
And join me: “I sing for I cannot be silent, My Father planned it all!”

we sang this song when i was around fifteen years old at word of life camp in schroon lake new york. It was the first time I had heard it. We also sang another song”though shadows deepen and my heart breaks i’ll never questiion the way he leads this side of heaven we know in part i’ll never question a broken heart. i am in my sixties now and i still remember the words to some of the verses. they really stuck with me.
The only hope we truly can have in this life is our sovereign God who knows what He’s doing. Where the things He does, especially for His people, are not senseless/purposeless, but are sent forth through infinite wisdom in infinite love and mercy all to the praise of His glory.
That is a wonderful song!! I learned it many years ago and it just started ringing in my head. So glad to find it. It is more and more meaningful in the later years of life is what I find.
Thank you for posting this The other morning while having my devotions this song came to mind. I sang this song often over the years. Now with a heavy heart it came to mind again. I just couldn’t remember all the words. I am Glad for your post.
